Zoo Knoxville Announces New VP of Education & Conservation

Michelle Kolar

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Michelle Kolar as Vice President of Education & Conservation. Kolar brings more than 20 years of experience leading education, conservation and public engagement programs at accredited zoos, aquariums and museums across the country.

Most recently, Kolar served as Director of Education at the Indianapolis Zoo, where she oversaw educational programming, interpretation, community engagement and conservation messaging throughout the guest experience. Previously, she held leadership positions at Zoo Atlanta, Shedd Aquarium, Brookfield Zoo, The Field Museum, and the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy.

“Michelle’s passion for connecting people with wildlife and conservation, combined with her impressive leadership experience, makes her an outstanding addition to our zoo,” said Bill Street, president and CEO of Zoo Knoxville. “As we continue expanding our impact in conservation, education, and community engagement, her vision and expertise will help strengthen our mission and inspire the next generation of conservation advocates.”

Michelle is an active leader within the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and serves in several leadership and advisory roles supporting conservation education and the SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) program. She is recognized throughout the profession for her collaborative leadership style and her ability to build strong teams and meaningful partnerships.

As Vice President of Education & Conservation, Kolar will lead Zoo Knoxville’s education and conservation departments, helping strengthen programs that connect guests with wildlife while advancing the zoo’s conservation mission.

“I am honored to join the talented team at Zoo Knoxville,” said Kolar. “The zoo has an incredible reputation for conservation leadership, animal care, and community engagement. I look forward to working alongside the staff, volunteers, and community partners to create meaningful experiences that inspire people to care for wildlife.”

We are excited to learn from Michelle as she propels our shared mission of conservation to our community and beyond.
