Zoo Knoxville has volunteer opportunities for adults and youth ages 13–17. Our volunteers support the zoo’s mission and serve as zoo ambassadors in a variety of roles.

Our next fair for those interested in volunteering is July 27th, drop in at the zoo anytime from 10am to 2pm. If you are interested in attending, contact the volunteer coordinator at jpeer@zooknoxville.org for more information.


  • Sharing information about the zoo’s animals, habitats and conservation programs with zoo guests
  • Assisting zoo staff with educational programs both on and off zoo grounds
  • Helping zoo staff with special events like BOO! at the zoo and Zoo Camp
  • Working behind-the-scenes to help with the zoo’s day-to-day operations


  • Zoo volunteer must be a zoo annual passholder
  • Due to the intensive training required for our volunteers, there is a one-time training and uniform fee of $75 for adult volunteers and $100 for youth volunteers
  • Volunteers must be prepared to commit at least one-year of service
  • At least 50 hours of volunteering must be completed in a calendar year
  • To keep volunteers updated and current on all information, volunteers must attend monthly meetings

Our next Adult Volunteer Workshop will be held on August 10, 11 and 17, 2019, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. To join us in this workshop please apply no later than Wednesday, July 31. There will be another full Adult Volunteer Workshop available in March 2020.

Our next Youth Volunteer Workshop will be held on April 4th and 5th, 2020 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. Youth Volunteer application packets are due no later than Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. There will be an interview scheduled following review of applications.
