Meet the New Ostriches
New southern white rhinos have cool new neighbors! Head to Zoo Knoxville for the ultimate savanna safari experience.
The Definition Of “A Lot.”
Built for Speed, Designed for Stares:
As the world’s largest, heaviest, and tallest birds, ostriches are certainly impressive—but they can’t fly! Instead, these feathered giants are built for incredible speed, reaching over 40 mph with their long, powerful legs. That makes them the fastest running birds, and the fastest two-legged animals on Earth. So, if an ostrich challenges you to a race, consider yourself warned!
Giant Eyes That Don’t Miss a Thing (or Get Lost In Those Large Eyes on Land):
Ostriches boast the largest eyes of any land animal, so big that they’re actually larger than their brain! This unique adaptation gives them excellent vision, helping them spot predators and survive in the wild. You might even catch them in a staring contest – they always win. Their vision is truly something to behold, even if their decision-making is sometimes a little… unpredictable.
Social (With a Side of Sprints):
Native to the open grasslands and savannas of Africa, ostriches live in groups called flocks or troops. They’re known for their powerful (and surprisingly effective) kicks, which they use for defense. You’ll often see them engaging in dramatic dust baths or sudden, energetic sprints across their habitat. They’re masters of expressive glances and are always ready to put on a show for their rhino neighbors.
A Species Worth Protecting:
Ostriches are a resilient species found across various African landscapes. While not currently endangered, their populations face challenges from habitat loss and human encroachment. Supporting Zoo Knoxville helps us educate visitors about these remarkable birds and fosters a deeper appreciation for all wildlife. Every visit helps protect these incredible animals, ensuring their future remains as vibrant as their personalities.
